Knowing How to Become a Photographer
Would you like to know how to become a
photographer? You are not alone. Many people want to
pursue a career in photography. Becoming a photographer though
takes more than just buying a new camera and taking shots. If
you really want to be successful in your photography career
choice, there are a couple of things you need to keep in
mind.
Assessing Yourself
Photography has a natural appeal. It is simply great to
imagine having your own studio and scheduling clients. In
reality though, some people may not have the natural aptitude
for photography even if they are interested in it. The first
step to become a photographer should therefore be to determine
if you have the eye and skill for it. The best time to do this
is before you enroll for formal classes.
Read photography technical manuals and books. Attend
seminars in your locality too. After you find out a bit about
photography, get yourself a camera which your resources would
recommend for beginners. Take shots and find out if the job
really fits you as much as you imagined it would.
Going to School
You might decide that photography is worth pursuing as a
career. If this is so, you might want to think about going to
school or taking short courses on photography. Some
photographers apparently do not believe that formal classes are
necessary. Indeed, many successful photographers really learned
on their own. It is possible to learn how to become a
photographer through self-study.
There are however some instances in which formal diplomas or
certificates are necessary. Photojournalists for example almost
always need school credentials to get ahead in their field.
Even if you would like to become a professional events
photographer instead of a photojournalist, a certificate may
still come in handy. Picky customers may be convinced more if
you have documents from school to show.
The Reality of Photography Careers
If you want to succeed, you shouldn’t set very high
expectations. Otherwise you will only be setting yourself up
for disappointment and you may want to abandon photography
altogether. Before you start in you career path as a
photographer, you should understand that many photographers,
including those in advertising and news are freelancers. These
photographers typically compete against each other to get
projects.
It is therefore pretty obvious that not all photographers
have stable sources of income. This is why some professional
photographers advise beginners to keep a day job and just take
photos as a sideline. In other words, you should not expect to
earn millions or achieve instant fame.
Becoming an Assistant
Knowing a couple of technical terms does not give you the
license to strut around. Even if you have gained considerable
skill, there will always be someone better than you. Before you
label yourself a certified and qualified expert, consider
getting yourself apprenticed first. This will give you the
opportunity to learn from someone better and to practice what
you know. Apprenticeship will also provide you with the
necessary exposure to potential clients.
Marketing Yourself
Photographers need more than just skill in taking photos. To
be successful, you also need to learn how to market yourself.
Even if you are the most talented photographer on the block,
you’ll never earn anything if people don’t know you have the
skill or that you even exist. While practicing as an assistant,
take the time to create your own portfolio. You might also want
to consider passing the word around to your friends about your
new hobby or career. Although friends and family may offer
cheaper pay for your work, you at least gain the opportunity to
publicize your skills.
Learning how to become a photographer is
not as easy as it seems. It is however, not impossible. Take
the first bold step to realizing your dream.
