Learning How to Become a Judge

It isn’t unusual at all for some people to want to know how to become a judge. For certain, the numerous legal dramas and movies out there have presented the profession in a very appealing way. You should realize though that it takes a lot to become a judge. What should you do if you want to be a judge?

Take the Right Course

It doesn’t take a scientist to figure out that judges need a school degree. Obviously, since judging in courts always involves the law, you should have graduated from law school first. You also have to take and pass the state bar. Becoming a practicing lawyer is also an added step. Otherwise, you will not be able to gain the experience and exposure needed before you can become a judge.

In some places, having a law degree is not an absolute necessity to become a judge. Those however who do not have law degrees naturally preside over limited scopes. Judges who were previously lawyers also naturally have an edge over those who did not study law.

Evaluate Your Character

There are some traits or characteristics that judges should always have. It is obvious that judges need to be perpetually diligent. This is necessary to prepare them for a lifetime of mastering the law. Aside from knowledge and mastery, judges should always have respect for the law. In other words, the rule of law should always take precedence even in an emotionally charged case. A judge should never be swayed by emotional appeal but should always look at cases in the light of how the law would deal with it. Judges cannot compromise. Otherwise, there would be no use for the law, courts and their services.

There is one other thing you need to know before you learn how to become a judge. You should be in it because you love the profession and not for money. As a lawyer, you would definitely earn more than as a judge even if you do receive more honor and respect in court.

Get Appointed or Elected

There are many kinds of judges. You can be a federal, state, appeals or trial judge. Depending on where you are and the kind of position you are after, you may have to take examinations first to determine your fitness for the post. You also have to make known your intention or desire to become a judge. This is done either through application or election. Some positions for judges are available through application in which you will be competing with a lot of other qualified applicants. Some state judges are elected. If this is the path you wish to take to become a judge, you need to campaign for your election.

Continue Studying

Becoming a judge doesn’t stop when you finally get elected or appointed. You also need to aspire to become a good and perpetually qualified judge. This is why judges are often required to pursue higher studies or other forms of continuing education. In a lot of cases, judges have to accomplish courses and attend a slew of seminars while actively performing their functions as a judge.

Moreover, you can’t just take a couple of seminars and then decide not to attend anymore. The requirement for continuing education for judges has to go on for as long as a judge has the position. In short, you should be ready to face a life in which you have to constantly update and improve yourself. This is understandable because judges have to be the first people to know if there are any changes or additions to the law.

It’s easy to know how to become a judge. It is an entirely different matter though to actually make it as a judge.
