You should first want to know if you have what it takes to

and characteristics that truly set them apart.

or while you are on the lowest corporate level if you have
these traits. Knowing the traits you lack will allow you find
ways and means to develop them. In general successful CEOs are
leaders, innovators, risk-takers, people oriented, analytical,
influential, good communicators, emotionally stable and
financial experts. If you ask a number of different CEOs, they
can give you many other different traits that have helped them
climb the executive ladder.
Find Your Field
There are people who are very flexible and self-motivated.
These natural traits can make them succeed just about anywhere.
For a lot of other people though, it helps to find a niche,
field or area of concentration that they are passionate about.
Finding your area of interest and focusing on it can help you
climb the corporate ladder faster because your natural interest
will push you to learn more about the business you are in.
Thorough knowledge about the business is what it takes to know
how to run it well or how to become a CEO.
At the same time, it is also important to broaden your
horizons. Of course, you shouldn’t lose track of your focus on
your niche. At the same time though, being a CEO involves
people and business management. Look for opportunities to
perform tasks in the various aspects of a business.
Get Promoted
Obviously, you need to be gradually promoted before you can
become a CEO. In some cases, setting yourself up for promotion
may truly require a lot of politics and elbow rubbing with top
executives. In other situations though, all it really takes is
making the best out of opportunities to display your skills,
traits and your ability to get a job done well. Make sure you
are clearly visible in a company and that you take credit for
what is yours while at the same time giving credit where it is
due.
Go to School
Let’s face it. Some traits and skills needed by would-be
CEOs have to be learned. Sometimes you may have to learn these
in school. Enrolling in formal long or short courses may be
worth your while. In any case, even if you already do possess
all the traits and skills needed to become the top executive,
having an extra higher education diploma under your wing can
increase your chances. Companies typically consider educational
attainment and continuing education as factors to consider for
promotion.
Learn Informally
You should also look for chances to learn the necessary
skills informally. The best candidates for informal teachers
are you boss, other executives and books by established CEOs.
Successful executives in particular are the best models you can
ever find to emulate.

can get there.
